Descente Athletic Unveils Project AX Time Trial Suit at Giro d’ Italia

(Boulder, CO) – It’s been two years in the making and the subject of multiple visits to the Low Speed Wind Tunnel in San Diego, CA.  Hundreds of hours of extensive textile research and several fit revisions are just part of what has gone into the development of what could possibly be the world’s fastest time trial suit.  This weekend at the 89th running of the Giro d’Italia, Descente Athletic will unveil the secret weapon that it hopes will vault Ivan Basso and Team CSC to the top of the general classification, the Project AX Time Trial Suit.

When Descente Athletic was named the official apparel supplier to Team CSC for 2006, one of their main objectives was to develop the world’s fastest time trial suit.  “Actually, the design team at Descente was working on the Project AX suit prior to the contract being signed with Team CSC.  This played a big role in securing the sponsorship”, said Descente’s Creative Director, Jim Mohan.

Though developed over the last few years, the Project AX Time Trial Suit has its conceptual roots dating back to the late 1980’s.  It was then that Descente Ltd. of Japan, the parent company of Descente Athletic in the USA, began testing the revolutionary SeiRyu Tech Suit.  Protected under patent, Descente Ltd. produced the SeiRyu Tech suit in the early 90’s with great success.  Borrowing from some of the same patents, Descente Athletic expanded on the development of the SeiRyu Tech Suit to produce the new Project AX Suit.

Precise seam placements designed to minimize wind resistance, the addition of highly aerodynamic fabric to areas of high drag, and a fit that is second only to one’s own skin,  Descente Athletic obtained results in the wind tunnel that may ultimately lead to a time savings of 18 seconds per hour (San Diego Low Speed Wind Tunnel, 2006).  Considering several grand tour races have been won by less than this margin, it is clear why this project has become such an important one for Descente Athletic and Team CSC.
